Free and Forced Vortex
Product Code : JA-FMAHLE-9945
The free and forced vortex apparatus (SKU JA-FMAHLE-9945) produces and measures both types of vortex in a clear acrylic cylinder on a plinth. A free vortex forms as water drains through an interchangeable outlet in the base, and a forced vortex is driven by a bladed impeller; depth gauges, a caliper-and-depth scale and a Pitot tube record the surface profile and velocities. It is supplied by JaincoLab for fluid mechanics practicals in engineering colleges.
Specifications
The free and forced vortex apparatus has a 250 mm diameter, 190 mm high acrylic tank on a powder-coated base plate, four outlets of 8, 12, 16 and 24 mm, a 3-blade impeller, a measuring device with vertical and radial scales and overall dimensions of 630 x 400 x 675 mm.

Experiments on the free and forced vortex apparatus
The free and forced vortex apparatus lets students measure the surface profile and velocity distribution of both vortices and compare them with theory: velocity falls with radius in a free vortex and rises in proportion to radius in a forced vortex.
- Measuring the surface profile of a free vortex for different outlet sizes
- Measuring the profile of a forced vortex at different speeds
- Velocity at points in the vortex with the Pitot tube
- Comparing measured profiles with free and forced vortex theory
- Showing secondary flow at the base of the free vortex with dye crystals
Scope of supply and ordering
The listing covers the acrylic tank on its base plate with pipework, the four outlet inserts, the 3-blade impeller, the measuring devices and the Pitot tube. Dye crystals and the water supply are not described in the product data. Accessories, spares and quantities are confirmed on the quotation.
MOQ, lead time and packing for the free and forced vortex apparatus are confirmed on each quotation for the quantity and delivery destination. Single units and orders for complete fluid mechanics laboratories are supplied, with export to Africa, the Middle East and South and South-East Asia.
Frequently asked questions
What outlet sizes are provided for the free vortex?
Four interchangeable outlets of 8, 12, 16 and 24 mm diameter.
How is the forced vortex produced?
By a 3-blade impeller in the base of the cylinder, turned by jets of water.
How are the vortex profiles measured?
With depth gauges, a combined caliper and depth scale and a measuring device with vertical and radial scales; a Pitot tube measures velocity.
