The Shrinkage Limit apparatus (SKU JA-ST-9832) measures the shrinkage behaviour of clayey soil. A fully saturated specimen is left to dry in free air, and its volume is measured at intervals by immersing it in a mercury bath. The shrinkage limit is the moisture content below which further drying causes no more reduction in volume, and the same data give the shrinkage ratio, shrinkage index and volumetric shrinkage.
