The Free Fall Apparatus (SKU JL-LE-10572, Cat. No. JSS-412/050) is a complete set-up for timing falling bodies in the mechanics laboratory. A sphere held by an electromagnet at the top of a scaled aluminium column is released and caught in a ball receiver, while photo gates clamped to the column feed a compatible timer. As a free fall apparatus with photogate timing, it removes the reaction-time error of hand stop-watches.

Experiments with the free fall apparatus
Practical work the apparatus supports:
- Timing a sphere over a measured drop to calculate the acceleration due to gravity, g

Frequently asked questions
How is the sphere released?
An electromagnet at the top of the column holds the sphere and lets it go when the magnet is switched off, so every drop starts from rest at the same point.
How is the fall timed?
By the compatible timer and photo gate system; the photo gate is fixed to the column with the rod and clamp supplied.
What is the column made of?
