The Brass Friction Rod (product code JA-EE-7663) is a 300 x 12 mm brass rod for static electricity experiments. Unlike glass, ebonite or Perspex, brass is a conductor, so when a brass friction rod is rubbed while held in the hand, any charge flows away through the body and the rod shows little effect. This contrast is the simplest way to show the difference between conductors and insulators, and it leads on to why charged conductors must be mounted on insulating supports.
