Scott-Russell Straight Line Motion
Product Code : JA-PLE-4190
The Scott-Russell Straight Line Motion (SKU JA-PLE-4190) is a working model of a standard mechanism that makes a point move in an exact straight line using only two links, one fixed pivot and one slider. It is built on an A3 board so a class can follow the motion and trace it. This Scott-Russell straight line mechanism model is one of a series of sixteen board-mounted mechanisms used in theory of machines, kinematics and engineering drawing teaching.
Specifications
The longer link AB has a pivot at its mid-point D to which the shorter link CD is connected; because CD = BD = AD, as B slides towards C the point A is forced to travel in a straight line.

Applications of the Scott-Russell straight line mechanism model
The model lets students confirm by tracing that point A really moves in a straight line, and then use the equal-length geometry CD = BD = AD to prove why, which makes it a clear introduction to straight-line linkages.
- Tracing the straight-line path of point A as the slider moves
- Proving the straight-line property from the geometry CD = BD = AD
- Plotting the loci of other points on the links for comparison
- Comparing exact and approximate straight-line mechanisms such as the Peaucellier and James Watt linkages
- Theory of machines, kinematics and engineering drawing classes in polytechnics, TVET institutes and colleges
Scope of supply and ordering
The listing covers the Scott-Russell straight line mechanism on its A3 melamine board. The stand, board clips and collet pencil are listed as a separate item. Accessories, spares and quantities are confirmed on the quotation.
Minimum order quantity, lead time and packing are confirmed on each quotation according to the number of models and the delivery destination. JaincoLab supplies individual models, complete mechanism sets for technical training and export consignments to buyers in Africa, the Middle East and South and South-East Asia.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Scott-Russell mechanism produce a straight line?
The shorter link joins the mid-point of the longer link AB, so CD = BD = AD, and as B moves towards C the point A must travel in a straight line.
How many links does it use?
Two links, with one fixed pivot and one slider.
