The Gram Stain Set (SKU JL-LE-11068, Model No. JL415/011) contains the four solutions needed to Gram-stain a bacterial smear: a crystal violet primary stain, Gram's iodine as mordant, an acetone-alcohol decolouriser and a safranin counterstain. Supplied by JaincoLab for microbiology practicals in colleges, nursing and paramedical courses, this gram staining kit lets students sort bacteria into Gram-positive and Gram-negative groups under the microscope.

How the gram staining kit is used
The solutions are applied in order to a heat-fixed smear:
- Crystal violet stains every cell in the smear purple
- Gram's iodine combines with the dye to form a crystal violet-iodine complex
- The acetone-alcohol decolouriser washes the complex out of Gram-negative cells but not Gram-positive ones
- Safranin counterstains the decolourised Gram-negative cells pink to red

Frequently asked questions
What colour are Gram-positive bacteria after staining?
Purple to violet. Gram-negative bacteria lose the crystal violet in the decolouriser and take up the safranin, so they appear pink to red.
What is the iodine solution in this set?
Gram's iodine made with PVP-iodine, a stable complex of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and iodine that dissolves completely in water and ethanol.
What does the decolouriser contain?
Acetone and ethanol mixed in equal parts (1:1).
