Forbidden Energy Gap Kit
Product Code : JA-PLE-7955
The Forbidden Energy Gap Kit (SKU JA-PLE-7955) is a self-contained set-up, supplied by JaincoLab, for finding the energy band gap of semiconductors in college and senior-school physics practicals. The forward-biased voltage of a germanium or silicon diode, or of an LED, is measured as the sample is heated, and the change of that voltage with temperature gives the forbidden energy gap. The kit includes its own meters, power supply, samples and hot air oven, so the energy band gap of semiconductor experiment needs no other equipment.
Specifications
The main unit contains a 0 to 9.99 V DC digital voltmeter, a 0 to 999 µA DC microammeter and a stabilised variable 5 V power supply; germanium, silicon and LED samples are heated in an energy-controlled hot air oven, with oil and a thermometer, and no additional equipment is needed.

Applications of the forbidden energy gap kit
Students set a fixed diode current, record the forward voltage at a series of temperatures as the oven heats the sample, and from the slope of the voltage-temperature graph work out the band gap of germanium, silicon or the LED material.
- Determining the energy band gap of germanium and silicon
- Comparing the band gap of an LED with those of Ge and Si
- Studying the temperature dependence of the forward voltage of a p-n junction
- Semiconductor physics practicals in B.Sc, engineering physics and senior-secondary classes
Scope of supply and ordering
The listing covers the complete kit: the main unit with voltmeter, microammeter and 5 V supply, the Ge, Si and LED samples, the hot air oven, oil and thermometer. Accessories, spares and quantities are confirmed on the quotation.
Minimum order quantity, lead time and packing are confirmed on each quotation for the number of kits and the delivery destination. Kits are supplied singly to college laboratories and in bulk for institutional and tender orders, with export to Africa, the Middle East and South and South-East Asia.
Frequently asked questions
What does the kit measure?
The forward-biased voltage of a germanium or silicon diode, or of an LED, as a function of temperature, from which the forbidden energy gap is found.
Which samples are included?
