Collision In Two Dimensions
Product Code : JA-PLE-4184
The Collision In Two Dimensions apparatus (SKU JA-PLE-4184) demonstrates the conservation of momentum and shows that momentum is a vector quantity with direction as well as magnitude. A steel ball rolls down a curved wooden runway and strikes a second ball held on an adjustable support, either head-on or at an offset. This two-dimensional collision apparatus is used in class 11-12 and undergraduate mechanics practicals.
Specifications
The set comprises a curved wooden runway with a groove at its highest point down which a steel ball is rolled, an adjustable object-sphere support, a plumb bob and two 19 mm steel ball bearings.

Applications of the two-dimensional collision apparatus
In a typical practical the incident ball is released from the same point on the runway each time, the two balls land on the floor after the collision, and their landing points relative to the plumb line are used to compare momentum vectors before and after impact.
- Verifying conservation of linear momentum in a head-on collision
- Showing momentum as a vector in oblique (glancing) collisions
- Resolving momentum into components along and across the original line of motion
- Comparing the angle between the paths of two equal balls after an oblique impact
- Mechanics practicals for class 11-12, B.Sc physics and engineering physics

Frequently asked questions
What does the apparatus demonstrate?
It demonstrates the conservation of momentum and shows that momentum is a vector quantity with direction as well as magnitude.
Can it be set for both head-on and oblique collisions?
Yes. The adjustable support holds the target ball exactly opposite the end of the runway for head-on collisions or slightly offset for oblique impacts.
What size are the balls?
Two steel ball bearings of 19 mm diameter are listed.
