The Bar Breaking Apparatus (SKU JA-FMDE-7726) shows the large forces that can be exerted when a metal bar expands on heating or contracts on cooling. A stout iron bar sits in the slotted end pillars of a heavy cast iron frame, 340 × 120 × 100 mm; one end is threaded for a large tensioning nut and the other has holes for a cast iron breaking bar, which snaps as the heated bar cools. Demonstrating the force of thermal expansion and contraction
In the classic demonstration the iron bar is heated strongly, the tensioning nut is tightened and a cast iron breaking bar is fitted; as the bar cools and contracts it pulls so hard that the breaking bar snaps, showing why bridges and railway lines need expansion gaps.

Scope of supply and ordering
