The Potometer (SKU JL-LE-11360, Cat. No. JSS-861/031) measures how fast a leafy shoot takes up water, the usual way to study transpiration in school and college biology practicals. A capillary tube with a millimetre scale is mounted on a strong backing plate and joined through a 3-way tap to a syringe; the capillary is the only glass part.

What does the millimetre scale measure?
The distance an air bubble moves along the capillary in a set time, which gives the rate of water uptake by the shoot.
How is the potometer reset between readings?
Water from the syringe, let in through the 3-way tap, pushes the bubble back to the start of the scale.
