The Physical Balance (SKU JA-CE-6184) is the traditional equal-arm balance of school and college laboratories, used to measure the mass of a body to 1 mg by comparing it with standard weights. It has a light, rigid brass beam on a metallic pillar and wooden base, two pans and a metallic pointer moving over a scale, all enclosed so that air currents do not disturb the reading. Uses of the physical balance in practicals
Students place the body on one pan and standard weights on the other until the pointer rests at the centre of the scale; the physical balance is used this way to find mass in density, specific-heat and chemical-change experiments and to teach the principle of moments.
