Optical Squares (SKU JA-MLI-1829) are hand instruments used by surveyors to lay off right angles, in multiples of 90° or of 45°. An optical square normally comprises two optical glass penta prisms in a sturdy housing, which let the user see two directions at once and stand exactly where they meet at a right angle. In school and college field work it is used for placing points on a line, taking offset measurements, setting out curves and determining horizontal plans.
