Experiments with magnesium ribbon
Short pieces cut from the roll are used for:
- Burning in air: the ribbon burns with a dazzling white flame and leaves a white powder of magnesium oxide, a standard example of a combination reaction
- Testing the oxide: the white ash dissolved in water turns red litmus blue, showing that metal oxides are basic
- Reaction with dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, giving hydrogen gas that burns with a pop
- Placing magnesium in the reactivity series alongside zinc, iron and copper
