Loci Board
Product Code : JA-PLE-4187
The Loci Board (SKU JA-PLE-4187) is a board-mounted mechanism for drawing the curves used to generate gear-tooth profiles: three cycloidal curves and an involute. A disc is rolled along a straight line, around the outside of an arc or inside a circle while a point on its rim is traced. This loci board for cycloid and involute curves is one of a series of sixteen A3 mechanisms used in engineering drawing, theory of machines and applied physics teaching.
Specifications
The board lets a student trace a point on the circumference of a circle as the circle rolls along a straight line, around the outside of a circular arc or around the inside of a circle, and trace the end of a straight line unwrapping from a cylinder to draw an involute.

Applications of the loci board
The loci board shows students where the cycloid, epicycloid, hypocycloid and involute come from, so the curves they meet in engineering drawing and in gear-tooth design can be generated and checked by a real rolling motion rather than only constructed with instruments.
- Drawing a cycloid traced by a point on a circle rolling along a straight line
- Drawing epicycloid and hypocycloid curves from rolling outside and inside a circle
- Generating an involute by unwrapping a straight line from a cylinder
- Relating cycloidal and involute curves to gear-tooth profiles
- Engineering drawing and theory of machines classes in polytechnics, TVET institutes and engineering colleges
Scope of supply and ordering
The listing covers the loci board mechanism on its A3 melamine board with its Perspex rolling and unwrapping parts. The stand, board clips and collet pencil are listed as a separate item. Accessories, spares and quantities are confirmed on the quotation.
Minimum order quantity, lead time and packing are confirmed on each quotation according to the number of boards and the delivery destination. JaincoLab supplies individual models, full mechanism sets for technical institutes and export orders to buyers in Africa, the Middle East and South and South-East Asia.
Frequently asked questions
Which curves can be drawn on the loci board?
Three cycloidal curves, from a circle rolling along a straight line, outside a circular arc and inside a circle, and an involute from a line unwrapping off a cylinder.
How are the curves recorded?
A pencil fits the hollow rivets, so the loci are transferred to a sheet of paper clipped to the board.
