Helical Spring
Product Code : JL-LEP-10350
The Helical Spring (SKU JL-LEP-10350) is a long galvanised spring-steel coil, 1.82–1.84 m unstretched, used to demonstrate transverse waves in physics lessons. This helical spring can be stretched to three times its length without deformation, so a class can watch wave pulses, reflections and standing waves travel along it. JaincoLab manufactures it in India for school and college physics laboratories.
Specifications
The helical spring is wound from galvanised spring-steel wire 1.25–1.43 mm thick into a coil of 20–22 mm outside diameter with 7 to 8 turns per centimetre, weighs 805–815 g and has a 20 mm circular hook at each end.

Applications of the helical spring
Teachers use the helical spring to make wave motion visible: a sideways flick of one end sends a transverse pulse along the coil, and steady shaking with the far end held produces reflections and standing waves that students can observe and measure.
- Sending single transverse pulses along the stretched spring to show how a wave carries energy
- Showing reflection of a pulse at a fixed end held by a second student
- Setting up standing waves and identifying nodes and antinodes
- Relating frequency and wavelength by changing the rate at which one end is shaken
- Wave-motion demonstrations in secondary-school physics and general science classes
