The Apparatus Kipp (SKU JL-GLE-10889) is a classic-type Kipp gas generator in glass, made by JaincoLab for preparing gases in the chemistry laboratory without heating. An acid, usually hydrochloric acid, acts on a solid such as marble chips (calcium carbonate), iron sulphide or granulated zinc to give carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide or hydrogen. Closing the outlet tap pushes the acid away from the solid and stops the reaction, so gas is produced only while it is being drawn off. This makes a Kipp apparatus a convenient source of gas for repeated class experiments.
